Cake Night takes place on the last Saturday of each month at 5:30 pm.
The evening begins with a guest speaker who shares their personal experience,
strength, and hope for about 20 minutes. Next, sobriety milestones are
celebrated—from the six-month marker through every subsequent annual
anniversary.
Each honoree is introduced by a presenter, who offers brief congratulations
before presenting a cake. The recipient then shares their Experience, Strength,
and Hope in a few concise remarks. After all milestone recognitions, the group
unites in singing the Cake Night song, “I Wanna Fly” by Errol Ranville.
“I Wanna Fly” was selected as the official Cake Night anthem at the first group
conscience meeting of the How It Works Group on October 10, 1991. The song
was recorded in 1988 in Winnipeg, aligning with AA’s non‑denominational and
inclusive values.
Errol Ranville—a Canadian Métis singer-songwriter born August 1, 1953, in
Ste. Rose du Lac, Manitoba—had early success with his band C‑Weed, whose
1980 hit “Evangeline” topped the Canadian country charts. He has released
multiple albums and continues performing. His strong Indigenous heritage and
dedication to inclusive music underscore why his song remains our tradition.
